What actually stops an AC in Saline County
The single most common no-cool call is a failed run capacitor, and it is usually an easy spot once a technician has the access panel off: the top of the can is bulged instead of flat, and the compressor or fan motor just hums instead of starting. It is a cheap part, and it is also the reason a system that ran fine yesterday can be dead silent by this afternoon.
Past the capacitor, the list gets more expensive fast. A contactor can seize shut or stop pulling in at all. Refrigerant can be low, and almost never because it needs "topping up" the way that phrase gets used casually: refrigerant is a sealed charge, and low refrigerant means there is a leak somewhere that has to be found before recharging the system makes any sense. A clogged condensate drain will trip the float switch and shut the whole system down as a safety measure, which looks like a bigger failure than it usually is. And a compressor pulling amp draw at or above its locked-rotor rating is telling you it is close to done.

How we find it instead of guessing
We take a temperature split between the return air and the supply air, and on a properly charged system running correctly that should land somewhere around 16 to 22 degrees Fahrenheit. Outside that range, something is off, and the split alone tells us where to look next.
From there it is static pressure across the coil, superheat and subcooling readings to confirm the refrigerant charge is actually correct rather than just cold enough to feel okay at the vent, and a microfarad reading on the capacitor checked against its rated value. Customers have told us they got a technician the morning after an evening breakdown with the bad capacitor already replaced, which is the difference between chasing symptoms and reading the actual numbers off the system.

What it costs to wait
A capacitor left bad long enough will eventually take the compressor with it, because the motors keep trying to start without the assist they need and that strain adds up.
