What to Check in the First Ten Minutes When Your AC Quits

Air conditioners tend to quit at the worst possible time, usually a Saturday afternoon with the whole family home and the house already climbing past 80 degrees. Before you reach for the phone, there are a handful of things worth checking, and every one of them takes less than a minute. Sometimes the fix is genuinely that simple. Sometimes it isn't, and knowing which is which saves you from either paying for a truck roll on a dead thermostat battery or, worse, ignoring a real problem because you assumed it was minor.

Check the Thermostat First

Start at the thermostat itself. If the screen is blank or dim, that's a battery problem before it's anything else, and most thermostats take two AAs that are easy to overlook for years at a time. While you're there, confirm it's actually set to Cool and not accidentally bumped to Off or Heat, and check that the set temperature is actually below the current room temperature. It sounds obvious until you remember someone else in the house might have touched it.

The Breaker: Reset It Once, Not Repeatedly

Next, the breaker panel. Outdoor AC condensers and indoor air handlers each have their own breaker, and a tripped breaker looks different from a normal one: the switch sits in a middle position rather than fully on. Reset it once, firmly, back to the on position. If it holds, good. If it trips again immediately, stop there and don't keep flipping it. A breaker that won't stay reset is telling you there's an electrical fault somewhere in the system, and repeatedly forcing it back on risks real damage.

The Float Switch Under the Air Handler

Now go find the indoor air handler, usually in a closet, attic, or garage. Look for a small plastic box near it called a float switch, sitting on or near the condensate drain line. That switch exists purely to shut the whole system off the moment the condensate pan starts to overflow, which is exactly what happens when the drain line gets clogged with the algae and gunk that build up in a humid climate over a season or two. If the float switch has tripped, the system did exactly what it was designed to do. It protected your ceiling from a slow water leak by shutting itself down. This is common enough in Arkansas humidity that it's worth checking before anything else on a no-cool call.

Ice on the Coil or the Lines

If the outdoor unit is running but the air coming out of the vents is weak or barely cool, go look at the indoor coil, or at least feel the refrigerant lines running to the outdoor unit. Ice on either one means the coil has frozen over, usually from restricted airflow, most commonly a filter that's been in there far too long. The fix here is not to keep running the system hoping it thaws on its own while making things worse. Switch the thermostat fan setting from Auto to On, which keeps air moving across the coil without asking the compressor to run, and give it a few hours. A dirty filter swapped out at the same time addresses the actual cause rather than just the symptom.

One more thing worth doing while you're at the vents: walk the house and check that supply registers aren't blocked by furniture, rugs, or a door that's been shut for weeks. A closed door in a small house can starve that room's return airflow enough to trip a float switch or ice a coil on its own, especially if several doors are closed at once during a hot stretch. It's an easy thing to overlook because none of it looks like an AC problem, it just looks like a door that's normally shut.

If you've checked the thermostat, reset the breaker once, found the float switch untripped, and there's no ice anywhere in sight, that's the point to stop troubleshooting and make the call. A system that won't start at all, one that trips its breaker a second time, or one that's blowing warm air with no obvious airflow restriction is past the point where guessing helps, and pushing further risks turning a simple repair into a bigger one.
